If our world were random—if resources combined together haphazardly, as if a giant took them all into his hands and tossed them down like so many [cards]—it’s a virtual certainty that the resulting combination of resources would be useless. Unless this chance arrangement were quickly rearranged according to some productive logic, nothing worthwhile would be produced. We would all starve to death. Because only a tiny fraction of possible arrangements serves human ends, any arrangement will be useless if it is chosen randomly or with inadequate knowledge of how each and every resource might be productively combined with each other. ...

The Twins' Ultrasound 10.21.11

We got to go see the twins again today. It is amazing how much they are already moving around. I could see their little arms and legs now! The little tikes are healthy and everything is going well. We were happy to hear that they each have their own placenta and sac, which is the most optimal condition for twins! In the upper left hand corner of each picture is an A or a B. A is one twin and B is the other. ...

Fall in Galena

See the full gallery on Posterous Every fall we make the (soon to be much larger) family trip to Galena, IL. It’s a beautiful little historic town with its own charm. One of my highlights is always grabbing a beer from the Galena Brewing Company. This year I also added climbing the massive staircase to my list. The reward is an amazing view from the top.

A Different Tragedy in Steve Jobs' Death

I love Apple and the products they create. I always had an interest in gadgets but was too busy playing guitar and trying to keep an old Dell laptop working to take it much further than that. It wasn’t until I moved to Chicago and bought my first Macbook Pro that I fell in love technology. There is something in the design of Apple products that makes them a pleasure to use, and that is thanks to the vision and genius of Steve Jobs. ...

A Worthy Chronicle by Randy Baranosky

I first met Randy during a spanish class in my freshmen year of high school. Later I started going to the same Church he did. I spent a couple years playing guitar on the worship team while he played drums. Later he would join Memphis Belle (unfortunately near the bands end) and we would tour the country together. Randy is extremely creative and talented and I have the utmost respect for him. ...

[bitter]sweet home Chicago

I love my city. Let’s get that out of way now. I love weather like we’re currently having. That’s why it sucks so bad when the tribune runs an article about how Chicago is projected to have one of its worst winters on record this year. Crap.

today my life changed forever

We obviously knew Tif was pregnant. We were trying to have our second baby and today was our first ultra sound. As the nurse started the ultrasound the first thing she says is “uh oh, your having twins.” Haha, funny joke. I thought, this nurse is funny. Then I see two sacs as she says “better you than me.” WHAT!!! Turns out that there’s two babies in there. I started sweating. HOLY CRAP! Twins!!Tif and I always said that we wanted two babies. I never considered having more. I was good with two. Well, God had different plans. This generation of Schaaff’s will number 5 just like the previous one. We’re e excited, but if I’m to be transparent, I must admit I’m super scared. I was already a little nervous about waking up all night again. Now I’m worried about how the heck I’m going to take care of two newborns and a toddler! I already know this will be the hardest thing we’ve ever done, but it will also be the most rewarding. I definitely don’t know how we’re gonna do it…but I know that we will. Please send up some prayer for us. There will be a lot of logistical and personal challenges and we need all the grace we can get. ...

We often feel lost parenting...

or at least I do. Raising a child is intimidating and I constantly question if I’m doing things right. Its for precisely this reason that babycenter is such a life saver. We subscribed to their email updates while Tif was pregnant with Mylin. Each week we got an email describing our child’s development. Those emails now come weekly for our toddler. Each update seems to contain at least one insight or reminder that helps navigate my interactions with Mylin. If you have children I highly recommend using the site. They also have an iOS app if you prefer that too email updates. ...
