The biggest myth we are fed as artists is that we need to sustain ourselves solely on our art. This is ridiculous. Every artist has at some point in time had some other job.

Oh man, I’m getting old. As an 18 year old, I never thought I would have recorded an album and would write about it 15 years later. For those that don’t know, The Dingees was the first touring band I was in. My first band to record an album. My first band on a label. My first band that did…

Giving Away Music Makes Sense

A really good take on the state of the music business as it relates to Spotify, piracy, iTunes, and money from Derek Webb.

I’ll go even further to say that I actually prefer illegal downloading over Spotify because when you get music illegally it’s at least implicit in the transaction that what you’re doing is potentially harmful to the artist. But with Spotify, your conscience is clear because you’re either enduring ads or paying to use the service and access the music. But from the blue-collar artist’s perspective, they’re not receiving any meaningful payment (there’s little discernible difference between $0.00029 and $0.00) and they are learning nothing about their fans, not to mention that music readily available on Spotify for little to no payment completely poaches the record sales upon which middle-class musicians are depending for survival (which is why I will withhold any new releases from Spotify in the future).

Tif and I have had a lot of conversations about whether we would change the past. I always would say that are things I would absolutely like to change. That’s where I naturally go with regret. Tif didn’t think you could divorce what has happened in the past with who we are today and in a lot of ways I’ve come to agree with her. Good or bad, where we are is a direct result of where we’ve been. I had to learn to not dwell on things that had happened, but instead focus on where I was and where I was heading.

I too have been fiddling around with Bing for the past few weeks and have found it surprisingly good experience. The results seem just as good as Google’s and they look a lot more attractive and clutter free on the iPhone. Though oddly enough the desktop results seem a lot more cluttered on Bing than Google.

This is a great read from Marco Arment. Unfortunately our country’s problems will continue without some major campaign finance reform. Instead of trying to protest these laws each time they inevitably come knocking, we need to unite against the corrupt campaign financing that allows money and special interests to dictate policy.
