Oh man, I’m getting old. As an 18 year old, I never thought I would have recorded an album and would write about it 15 years later. For those that don’t know, The Dingees was the first touring band I was in. My first band to record an album. My first band on a label. My first band that did…

I love this band and played this record hundreds of times.

iOS Music Players

Pro tip.

On the desktop we’re mostly limited to using iTunes for music playback (aside from streaming services). If you don’t like iTunes, good luck finding a better alternative.

Thankfully the situation is different on an iOS device. Don’t like apple’s music app? Simply fire up the AppStore and download a 3rd party music player. I recommend checking out Ecoute, Track 8 , Groove 2.

>

Most of you who’ve been reading Hermitology or following Thrice over the years are probably well aware of how much I admire Dave Grohl and how much I’ve been inspired by what he’s done and continues to do. Marc Maron had Grohl as a guest on the WTF Podcast this week and the conversation they had boosted that admiration and inspiration to a whole new level. It’s an absolute must-listen. I could have listened to them chat for hours.

I was going to make a list of my 10 favorite albums from 2012, but 2012 turned out to be a great year for music. In light of that here are my 15 favorite albums from 2012.

Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls

Streaming Music Services VS an iTunes Addiction

Music has been a huge part of my life for many years. I’m no longer a touring musician but I still play music as much as I can. Music is always playing in our house and I can’t imagine living life without it.

Time has changed the way I listen to music a lot. I came of age in the era of the CD, but ever since I got my first iPod I’ve relied almost entirely on iTunes for my music consumption. At this point I’ve amassed a collection that would take 43 days to listen to.

Giving Away Music Makes Sense

A really good take on the state of the music business as it relates to Spotify, piracy, iTunes, and money from Derek Webb.

I’ll go even further to say that I actually prefer illegal downloading over Spotify because when you get music illegally it’s at least implicit in the transaction that what you’re doing is potentially harmful to the artist. But with Spotify, your conscience is clear because you’re either enduring ads or paying to use the service and access the music. But from the blue-collar artist’s perspective, they’re not receiving any meaningful payment (there’s little discernible difference between $0.00029 and $0.00) and they are learning nothing about their fans, not to mention that music readily available on Spotify for little to no payment completely poaches the record sales upon which middle-class musicians are depending for survival (which is why I will withhold any new releases from Spotify in the future).

The idea of separation as a tool is the antithesis of rock and roll, which is a bunch of guys in a room making a sound and just capturing it. It’s the sound they make together, not separated. This mythical bullshit about stereo and high tech and Dolby, it’s just totally against the whole grain of what music should be.

This is one of the better band documentaries I’ve seen in recent times. Its really interesting to see all of their southern pentecostal and redneck roots.

Its fantastic news that Jack White has stopped screwing around with Insane Clown Posse (wtf?) and decided to record a proper solo album. You can stream the first single at the link.

The Rolling Stones are one of my favorite bands and one of the greatest rock and
roll bands of all time. Keith is a very unique player with a sound all his own.
If you dig his playing, or even if you’re just a vintage gear nut, check out
this run down on his guitars and amps. The dude’s Fender Twin is serial
#00003!!

A Worthy Chronicle by Randy Baranosky

I first met Randy during a spanish class in my freshmen year of high school.
Later I started going to the same Church he did. I spent a couple years playing
guitar on the worship team while he played drums. Later he would join Memphis
Belle (unfortunately near the bands end) and we would tour the country together.
Randy is extremely creative and talented and I have the utmost respect for him.
